Corvus Karga

Corvus Karga 2009:

I tasted some Bozcaada magic for the first time back in 2010 on a wine weekend. After visiting a number of wineries (pre-government restrictions) we ended the day at Corvus. This successful Turkish winery has a large range of wines both white and red. But I was most interested in the indigenous grape varieties of the island.

For the first time, I tasted the Vasilaki grape a native grape of Bozcaada in the Aegean Sea region. If you think the name sounds Greek you would be correct. The island was once known as Tenedos when the island was under Greek administration from 1912 to 1923.

This white grape is surprisingly fresh and light not unlike a voignier. With a hint of oak, no wonder I enjoyed it being a fan of oaked Chardonnay. The other native white grape in this blend, called Çavuş is a special grape. Due to the windy conditions on the island, the best Çavuş grapes grow on Bozcaada.

With a light nose, this wine presents with a light lemony hue and has a medium finish. Fresh and lightly fragranced this is a very agreeable wine. I’m going to give the Corvus Karga 2009 a four-cork WYW (Wet Your Whistle) Rating. I would definitely buy another bottle if I can source one.

4 corks
